For much of this season, many people were preaching patience and that Pochettino be given time. Yet Gary O'Neil joined wolves a week before the start of the season 🤣
Personally, I think the club should consider (at some point) Steve Clarke. He has a reputation of being very good on the training ground (endorsed by Jose and Dalglish) and these players need to be coached; for what it's worth, he knows the club and was a winner as a player and a coach; thirdly, he will organise us and make us tough to beat.
A leftfield one would be Rui Faria. Here's an interesting interview he did with The Times in October 2022
An interesting replacement for Poch suggestion I have heard is Arne Slot from Feyenoord. He likes to work with young players and has a clear tactical philosophy. Even more importantly he has won the Erdivise at pretty much his first or second attempt. In the list above there are few I would trust with this squad. Sanchez looks promising but actually record prior to this season is mixed. I do like watching Girona though. Also not sure of his language skills. Zidane and Jose are not right and Xavi Alonso isn't coming here. I cant see us going back to Brighton.
SDs have shown they can't build a coherent team, choose players or negotiate transfers. Why are they there? Neil Bath , and Joe can do the recruitment and if necessary have a negotiator to do contracts.
Over last 2 years there have been so many layers to this failure it's impossible to blame one outlet. I think everyone can agree with all successful clubs it comes down to the Board, Manager then players.
The board have made massive mistakes in recruitment by not focussing on a striker and other key areas but lets not forget when these transfers did come in, we were all very excited for majority of them even when some of them disappointed. Their biggest recrutiment mistake has been all manager appointments and working with the 'right football people'
Great managers elevate poor, average and good teams up a level. Look no further than Tuchel, Emery, Klopp etc Poch's history was never something to to shout about as a serial failure and constantly questioned for his tactics. With our players I think someone like a Spaletti would elevate us big time. Has the experience, passion and tactics to really build on. Plus we've always done well with Italian managers.
Players are to blame too where it's been like watching U8 at times and not putting away easy chances or right decision making which has costed us. Do we put it down to a young squad? I don;t think so because we saw the same script with experienced players such as Auba, Koulibaly,Chilwell, Sterling, Cucrella, Kepa, Mendy, Ziyech, Jorginho etc all under the new ownership.
It's been said enough times sacking the manager wont magically save us and solve all our problems, but it will fix a huge one if replaced properly. Replace the decsion makers, replace the manager then build on this talented crop of players we've spent 1bn ... and ADD a striker!
I agreed largely with your review of the potential manager list and 100%. Any thought of Jose returning is madness.
as usual great article
