Good Morning Ladies and Gents,
I know people have huge question marks over this signing from a financial perspective and also the hoarding of young talents, but he is due to be a Chelsea player any minute now and from that moment everything else goes out of the window and the lad gets my full support.
Omari Kellyman
Player profile;
Age: 18
Nationality: English
Position: Attacking Midfielder/Forward
Height: 6ft 3in
Summary;
He is a young lad who grew up in the Academy of Derby County before switching to Aston Villa at the age of 16, he was born in Derby to Northern Irish Mother and Ghanaian Father which makes him eligible for either of those countries internationally as well as England due to his place of birth, he currently plays in the England youth set ups and has done since the age of U19, after previously appearing for Northern Ireland at U17 level.
He is an attacking midfielder who is versatile and equally comfortable on the wing, as an inside forward, a traditional no10 or as a centre forward. This is liable to change after adapting into the senior game. He made 6 appearances for the Aston Villa first team last season and was a regular within the squad.
Style of play;
Kellyman likes the ball at his feet and will run with power and directness, his athleticism and quick feet allow him to run past defenders to run towards the opposition box to either get his shot away or play the ball out wide and make his way into the box. When receiving the ball under pressure he uses his intelligence to shield the ball where he will either turn his man quickly with a burst of pace or find his teammate with a pass and move into space to receive again. Although on the whole his decision making tends to be very smart with good ball retention and intelligent passing, he can sometimes make rash decisions to shoot from distance whilst the team are in a good attacking position. Despite his athletic build and his quickness, he is also something of an aerial threat, with some of his goals coming with his head for the Northern Ireland u17’s. Kellyman naturally plays as a second striker dropping deep to collect the ball or make late runs into the area. He is also capable of making runs in behind the defence.
A couple of clips below that are worth watching;
Verdict;
Massively overpriced for his age and experience but I think the price reflects the PSR situation more than his value, multiple Premier League clubs seem to be doing ‘player trades’ to meet PSR rules and requirements before June 30 deadline.
On ability, he is very exciting, a really good talent who could progress in to a top level player, I worry about his pathway but he is good enough to force his way through, the jury will be out on the deal but don’t let that deter how you support the lad and his Chelsea career.
I am in no way comparing the 2 players, but just remember how people reacted about the Cole Palmer deal a year ago, which was over double this price……..

Excellent analysis of Omari Kellyman, Luke!!
Thanks for another insightful article Luke, you have clearly provided us with a better understanding of the quality of Omari. Obviously the jury will be out for one or two years, but he certainly seems to have a quality that I haven’t seen from some of his equivalents in the Cobham teams.
Out of interest does anybody have any clarity on how the £19 million is broken down. For example is a proportion of it based upon performance related payments?
