There comes a point though isn’t there where you wonder if the SD’s are just pretending to go after Marquee signings with the intention of pulling out and not actually signing the player.
It’s also a concern if this keeps happening the only reason players and agents will talk to Chelsea is to drive up the salary package elsewhere.
A player isn’t signed until he has signed is my attitude but it is frustrating that the club issue’s the demand of Champions league football qualification but is still prepared potentially to go into the season with an unbalanced squad.
Still as you rightly say it’s only the first week of the transfer window gone so far.
Overall I agree with what you are saying score, but surely there comes a point where you just have to pay big wages for top talent? Where are we going to be in 5 years if they refuse to pay anyone £200k plus?
The Score you open with this comment “I do my best to not get too emotionally attached to these deals until they happen, and always try to stand back from the raw emotion of it when assessing it all. I don’t think looking for easy scapegoats is helpful personally, things like this are always very nuanced and more complex than the media suggests”.
For that alone, I thank you for being the voice of reason and I know that I’m not alone and thanking you for that as I have had several direct messages over the last few days/weeks along the same subject line. Not only do you set out your approach but you then follow up with a calm, well written article without rhetoric, get out clauses and I told you so comments.
For those of us that are like minded, can I thank you for this and your other articles which are all written in the same manner and are a pleasure to read.
I totally concur with you that there is a clear plan that has actually been the plan from the outset and if nothing else after the first window has been one that has been followed consistently. It is the right approach, the right way to go and your Liverpool example is spot on. Furthermore is quite clear that Manchester United are also going to now follow this type of plan.
Like you, I think it is totally acceptable for Chelsea and the sporting directors to back away if the numbers didn’t add up as they got closer to the end of the transaction and the clarity they needed. That is good business sense and people need to realise that football is a business. With Financial fair play we have to be accountable, and play within the rules.
Once again, my thanks and I agree with you we are in a good place to go forward
Load of waffle. Si and Alex both have said the reason he didn’t come is that we were again too incompetent to close out the deal. Joe Sheilds put in real work to convince him to join but he does not sign the deals. Once it got passed on to the two clowns we have as our SDs it got messed up. You can talk all about the project being about winning but that doesn’t show up in the squad building. You need ceiling raisers to win. We haven’t sign even 1 of them! And how much money have we spent since Clownlake took over? How much?
It’s a project just to keep us relevant, hoard players and then flip them for profit or book value.
I guess I'd question why we needed Olise when we have so many left footed Right Wingers already on the books. The fact though that we are now looking for a left winger is perhaps an admission of guilt that Sterling and Mudryk were poor signings.?
Personally, I hope we make minimal signings this summer; we build on what we have this group having a year under the belt; and focus on quality over quantity. To me, Jackson looks an excellent left winger (he showed that at Villa away in the Cup) - he's pacey, direct and can score goals. Any wide player than score is worth their weight in gold!! So let's prioritise our transfer budget on a world class striker and goalkeeper and then move Jackson out to the left. As soon as we have a striker that can score regularly in the league, he will completely transform our team.
Can you explain what toxic positivity is?

Onwards we go! No use crying over spilled milk! Up the Chels! 💙
