Chelsea Newsletter: Friday 13th Jan
Covering: Fulham reflections, Sources on Marcus Thuram, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Noni Madueke, and more, Addressing Potter's leadership comments, Plus all the latest CFC news and transfer rumours!
Morning all,
It’s a very glum one for sure and I’m far from in my usual chirpy Friday mood. And for the superstitious amongst us, today is Friday the 13th, and boy did we get more terrible bad luck yesterday. Another injury to a player who had actually been making a good impact, and Joao Felix, who had been quality on his debut, got sent off and is out for the next three games.
I didn’t even do a match report as such, because I was too hacked off. But I did pen some immediate thoughts on why we should not be thinking about sacking another manager right now, I do not want another Groundhog Day, here is why.
Away from all that gloom now, I’d head over to the live blog from yesterday here next to get all the very latest on Chelsea’s transfer pursuits in fast-changing situations right now.
I sent out a sourced story yesterday morning on the latest on our attempts to sign Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach. Had to get this out quick due to situations changing, but in case you missed it, you can find it out here. Since then, my report from earlier in the week about us being in advanced talks to sign him, has been confirmed by other reliable outlets (see live blog).
Chelsea are still looking to sign a new midfielder this window, and I’ve got a deep dive half sourced and half opinion article on the current situations surrounding Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia, and much more in here. I also give my opinions on the Caicedo situation, and a lot more.
To roundup the articles, I’ve addressed those leadership comments and senior player talks from Graham Potter this week here. I have some mixed views about this one.
I also put out the latest Podcast yesterday and had The Guardian’s Chelsea transfer reporter Jacob Steinburg join me to chat all things January transfer window and hear about Chelsea’s exact plans for the rest of this month. Don’t miss this one here!
Once again, I will be back on the website on Sunday for the latest set of articles. But if I get anything significant from then until now, I’ll be reporting it on the Substack App chat feature (available to download on android and iPhone - just search Substack in the app store).
Have a good weekend guys, or try at least!
Peace, Si.
Tough times... Joao was unbeliveble up until the red card. If he continus like this surely we’ll go for him permanently, we need to! Got them Hazard vibes about him where he can create stuff by himself. Him and Nkunku would cook together.
We really need to get a midfielder in NOW! Surely we’ll put even more work into that now that Zakaria got injured? We need to get one in really really quick and a certain RC should be activated without doubt.
Potter stats:
15 points out out of a possible 36 in the league, so we're "earning" 0.42 points per game
We have a 33.33% win rate in the league since his appointment
We have won 1 in our last 10 league fixtures
We have won 3 in our last 13 games in all competitions
Potter has now had 19 games in charge in all competitions - W8 D4 L7 F14 A20
We have scored 2 goals once in our last 9 league fixtures; you need your defence to be perfect if you're going to win games on that basis. Unsustainable
Here's the really concerning stat - our run rate now puts us on course to finish on 34 points in the league, if Potter completes the season.
We are in a relegation battle
