Chelsea likely to sell or loan Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer
The Blues goalkeeper has been dropped from the latest Spain squad
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalga has been dropped from the Spain squad for the first time since he became a Chelsea player, sparking more doubts about his future at the club.
Alongside Kai Havertz, the Spaniard is Chelsea’s most expensive signing, joining from Atletic Bilbao for £71 million in 2018; but he has failed to be a success at the club, albeit a few isolated good periods of form.
He’s now playing second fiddle to Edouard Mendy, and that is a situation that will not change this season unless anything drastic happens.
We have been told that the board are now considering how to approach this situation, and a move on loan or a permanent move this summer is now becoming increasingly likely, even though deep down the board had been hoping to keep the faith with him.
Kepa will be desperate to save his international career, and his domestic career for that matter, and he will not be able to do that unless he is a number one keeper at a club. Chelsea know this, and are aware that he will now be itching to go.
It is becoming clear that he wont make it at Chelsea, even though Thomas Tuchel is still expected to use him as the odd rotation choice in this seasons run-in, it will not be enough.
As we reported, Chelsea are also attempting to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma on a free transfer this summer.
The most likely outcome will be a similar deal that they did for Alvaro Morata, a loan deal with an option or more likely an obligation to buy.
As for potential suitors, signing Kepa will be a huge risk for any club right now, but he still does have clubs out there considering a move. Chelsea might just have to be prepared to take a rather big loss on him, unfortunately.
