I would absolutely hate to see lots of shots from outside the box as too many pepper the roof of the stand not the goal. Far too many wayward shots from outside the box from our players when they’ve missed the pass to put someone better positioned to score in.
As a result the attack breaks down and we surrender the ball.
Total Chelsea goal stats in open play 109 shots 9 goals ie 1 in 11 ..from set pieces 27. Shots 1 goal a miserable 1 in 27.. the chances of a shot going in across the division from outside the box is 14% in 1.5 in 20 a worse stat than our current goal tally and includes the best shooters in the division.
54% of goals scored from inside the penalty area and box.
I rest my case. Run at the defenders pass into the box and keep shooting from close range regardless of the low block. I settle for deflections if I have to.
But shooting outside the box makes no sense whatsoever.
2 goals from inside the box tonight players running at defenders... handful missed again.. virtually every long shot from out side the box , at the keeper, wide or high or wide & high.
Also we spent 30m on a young Kid who finished well in Spain playing him down the middle, maybe keeping 433 v 4231 didn’t work for sure, on the upside Kai H and MM are setting the world alight :-) I am confident we will get it right
Set pieces is a big one. Sat I watched Conor struggle to deliver a meaningful corner that could threaten our opposition often we can not get the ball over or past the first man, and we continued the allow him to take the corner even though we failed after 3-4 times we kept doing the same. we certainly have the players to deliver but not sure why they are struggling btw this is not me criticising Conor I’m a big fan but it’s the process of doing the same thing over and over and expect a outcome again I firmly believe we are in transition but time is ticking 🙌
I posted elsewhere on this it’s a easy one put a man on the front post don’t pack them all in the middle of the box where the other team can mark them out.. 1 back post 1 front post the rest in middle or running in for corners stretch the other team ffs.
As stated previously there are 0 goals through 10 or 11 matches from the combined efforts of Caicedo, Enzo and Conor.
Enzo has taken a number of shots but hasn't looked like scoring.
Cucu, Gusto and Colwill will not be scoring if playing as wingers. James might although Gusto has more assists.
Also Poch's teams have been far too defensive. I'm not convinced yet that Palmer is an outside shooter but he might be. I do think Chukwumeka would be if he was fit.
So when you boil it down, if we want to score goals we have to be clever (that is draw the opposition out by giving them the ball), we have to play more goal scorers (three in the front plus Palmer until some else is fit, plus Maatsen plus Reece for his five games a season), and we have to score first.
