Evening all,
Quick disclaimer, I am watching this game whilst also watching another game on my laptop (scouting) so if I miss anything I apologise!
Summary;
First 30 minutes…..
Shambolic is all I can say really. The first goal is completely avoidable, awful from Badiashile who’s lack of awareness and forward thinking put Veiga in trouble from the outset, Veiga’s lack of special awareness and poor decision making contributed. Veiga isn’t a centre midfielder for me, he’s a Left Back.
Remainder of first half….
Some lively signs from Joao Felix who has been our only player with any credit in this first 35 mins, one excellent solo run before putting it just over and then a chance that was excellently blocked by Lloyd Kelly. As well as a good long range strike that was comfortably saved by Pope.
At this point I am so confused why we have nobody available to play right back on the bench! Disasi is just terrible, as are our other back up centre backs.
Jorgensen is no better than Sanchez with the ball at his feet, doesn’t take the risks Sanchez does which is granted but that’s the main reason Maresca won’t pick him in the league.
Newcastle haven’t been that good, we’re helping them out massively and that’s getting the crowd up and onside for the Geordies.
Mudryk has ended the half strongly, a lovely run past Kraft with the defender recovering well.
Half Time…. Veiga off for Madueke or Palmer please, drop KDH deeper.
2nd half here we go…. No subs.
Incredible bit of skill on his goal line from Jorgensen.
Nkunku with a good chance after a nice pass from Enzo and cut back form Cucurella, block from Kelly was superb.
How Anthony Gordon hasn’t been sent off is outrageous, terrible tackle, VAR would have intervened if available.
Awful punch from Pope, KDH should score for me.
Madueke on for KDH.
VAR to the rescue again for Newcastle as Gordon (already booked, should be off) seemingly pushes Madueke in the back after a nice bit of skill.
Mudryk with a nice cutback again, Nkunku fluffs his lines in front with of goal.
With 20 mins left we have had 11 more touches in the opposing penalty area than Newcastle, 24 to their 13. 2nd half as been better but all bark and no bite!
Felix with a great chance but he puts it narrowly wide, one of them nights…..
Newcastle hit the post with just over 5 mins of the 90 left, poor from Mudryk in the build up.
It’s quite clear to see Enzo Maresca didn’t care about this game from minute 1. Just the one substitution at 90 mins.

Not sure why we keep donating minutes to obvious transfer busts such as Disasi and Badiashile. Not to mention the pointless 30m KDH deal while Carney is rotting away on the bench despite being both a better player now and having a higher upside.
Meanwhile we have top youth prospects like Acheampong who are questioning their futures at the club over a lack of chances? I cant think of any real justification for why Disasi is starting while Acheampong has had a whopping 27 minutes so far this season.
2 things:
We can now appreciate some of the sh1te the Board have bought when they are exposed to meaningful opposition;
For a manager that has never won anything, Maresca is taking a big risk making 11 changes in a knockout competition (and only making 1 substitution)
