Sources: Chelsea getting closer to confirming a new backup Goalkeeper

Chelsea are looking to confirm a new Goalkeeper soon

As I exclusively reported on this site in recent weeks, Chelsea had been in talks to sign former Crystal Palace goalkeeper, Wayne Hennessey.

I asked about why this deal didn’t get done and all I got told was ‘for obvious reasons’, so I’ll let you guys make of that as you will!

But our interest in him was backed up by top sources included The BBC and The Athletic, so as surprising as it was, it was legit.

Anyways, he’s joined Burnley now which I know many of you were pleased to hear about, so what next?

Chelsea are trying hard to secure a new backup/third choice goalkeeper, more likely to be third choice as things stand, due to nothing really progressing for Kepa Arrizabalaga right now and him actually being happy to stay as things stand. Lazio are keen, but at the moment there hasn’t been much more than initial talks. I think Chelsea are hoping for more teams to become interested and make a move.

I still think a third choice goalkeeper will be our first confirmed signing this summer, and at the moment the only two names I know we have been making moves for is Sergio Romero, who became a free agent after leaving Manchester United this summer, and another free agent, Marcus Bettinelli formerly of Fulham.

I’m told that Bettinelli talks have been progressing well and Chelsea are closing in on announcing him as their first signing this summer. Not a done deal yet, but the signs are positive and I’m even told from an unconfirmed source (please note this means untested so you cannot hold me to this) that he was having a medical with us on Monday. I cannot 100% confirm this as of now, but I do know things have been moving along positively and it seems likely to happen.

Chelsea would prefer Bettinelli due to him being homegrown and they’re working hard on this signing.
