Frank Lampard talks up Kai Havertz and defends his 4-3-3 formation using two 8s
Lampard says Havertz in an 8 can be more dangerous than in a static 10
There has been many words spoken about Kai Havertz, his form so far at Chelsea, and Frank Lampard’s use of him in his system so far.
The German international was wisely removed from Lampard’s recent starting line ups after coming under some criticisms for his recent performances.
The midfielder has shown signs of brilliance, but he is taking some time to settle into a new league and a new team, which can be entirely natural for some players.
But there has been questions raised over Lampard using Havertz too deep in his 4-3-3 formation, and many believe that the 21-year old should be playing in the number 10 role, something that I have also emphasised.
However, Lampard has defended his line up and using two 8s in a 4-3-3, and for that I applaud.
“I’ve heard some people talk about the system with two eights as though they have to run in straight lines up and down the pitch,” said Lampard.
“It doesn’t have to be that way when you have players with different qualities like Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante.
“These players play in different ways and arrive between the lines and sometimes into the area inhabited by an orthodox number 10.
“And that can be more dangerous than a number 10 that just stands there all day. They can be, for me, more dangerous, but those are the things that need time.”
Whilst I do agree with this statement, and the fact that players arriving from deep can certainly be more of a threat than a static number 10, my only concern would still be Havertz’ defending when we are playing against the better teams and are under some pressure.
I don’t want to see Havertz on the edge of our own box defending that often, he needs to be in advanced positions using his main strengths.
This is where I maintain that perhaps going with a 4-2-3-1 formation against the better teams might be something worth looking at. Perfect the 4-3-3 yes, but perhaps adapt to the teams that attack more.
Lampard has also jumped in to speak up Havertz’ quality and ability once again after the Morecambe win on Sunday.
“There are endless levels Kai can go up,” Lampard said, “because of the potential of the player and he's young.
“He had Covid and suffered a bit but has come back. Today I saw, and again in the week in training, him fitter and stronger.
“There are levels for Kai to go up but again we have to remain patient. He's come here with a huge amount of talent, but has to get accustomed to the league.
“We as a club must support him in that, now and for the future. It's a small step in the big picture, but a good step.”
