EXCL: Havertz Masterclass, Sterling Clumsy, Zidane Links, Summer Priority Shouldn't Be Bellingham, UCL Chances, Ahead to Leicester
The Frank Leboeuf Column
That’s now two wins in a row now for Chelsea, but it’s only one convincing win. The Leeds game was a win, but we unfortunately saw many of the same issues, one being finding it hard to score.
The Dortmund game in the first half, Chelsea were fantastic in terms of commitment and the way they were approaching the game. But we did have the same story in terms of missing chances to score. We should have had a penalty though with Emre Can pushing Kai Havertz. But still we couldn’t score.
I was very happy with the way the players went into that game and overall Chelsea deserved to go through. If there are two very good games Chelsea played this season it is those two games against Dortmund.
The frame of mind the players were in when they played that game was perfect, and that’s the way we want to see them play. We saw at the end of the game it was 39% possession for Chelsea and 61% for Dortmund. But I don’t care about that because I want you to create chances to score, to go forward fast, and that’s exactly what they did. In order to do so you need to be good defensively, and all players at the back played very well, and it’s rare this season I can say that.
Marc Cucurella was one of the best players on the field - taking risks every time he got the ball back and going for it convinced that he could do so. Kalidou Koulibaly was perfect, Wesley Fofana was perfect. Of course Reece James and Ben Chilwell do the job but we aren’t surprised about that.
We have one certainty though, and that is to stop playing Kai Havertz as a striker, because in this game he showed that he is so useful in the middle of the park in the free role. You cannot put him back as a striker.
