Monday morning was certainly livened up on social media as The Athletic broke a story suggesting that Chelsea will try and sign Dortmund striker Erling Haaland this summer.
As we have alluded to in previous articles and on our Podcast here at SPTC, Chelsea WILL join the race to sign Haaland when such a race begins.
Whether Dortmund will be willing to open the bidding wars this summer or not is another thing. His release clause comes in to play in 2022, so there is a chance they might look to cash in this summer.
Even still, the battle will still only just begin at that stage. Every top club are likely to make a move to sign the world-class 20-year old forward, but can they all afford him?
This is where Chelsea might have a chance - being one of the few clubs who are still in a strong financial position off the back of the pandemic.
So as the Athletic say, Chelsea WILL be entering the race, and they do feel like they have a decent chance of landing him, and they’re more than ready to break their highest transfer fee record to do so.
Where will that leave Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner, IF Haaland arrived at Stamford Bridge?
Well, quite simply, and this might sound harsh, but it really doesn’t matter.
If a player who is already considered the best striker in the world becomes available, and you are a top club looking to win titles, you simply must go in for him.
Werner is suited to playing close to a main striker, or at least playing off someone closer to him. So there is nothing to say down the line that Chelsea might not look to play two forwards.
Whilst I do feel that Werner will still come good at Chelsea, signs of an early confidence loss is a little concerning.
Abraham meanwhile, has a contract offer on the table from Chelsea but has so far paused negotiations. His current deal ends in two years time, so there is no immediate rush. But you feel if Haaland did arrive, he would move on.
Again like Werner, I do have faith in Abraham and I do believe he has a lot more to show us yet than what we have seen. But if you ask me to chose him or Haaland, I am choosing Haaland.
If Chelsea want to be the best and have an opportunity to sign the best, then they must at the very least try and do so.
How much would he cost?
