Chelsea have shortlisted Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez
The defender has fuelled transfer speculation by 'liking' a tweet linking him with a move to Stamford Bridge
Chelsea are exploring the options of bringing in a new elite centre back in the summer, and Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez is high on the shortlist, our sources say.
There have been various whispers of the 25-year old is on the radar of Chelsea, and we have reported this on a few occasions recently.
Other top sources such as Fabrizio Romano and Matt Law of the Telegraph have also mentioned Gimenez as a potential Chelsea target.
The club and Frank Lampard are in sync with transfers, and the Chelsea executives are going out of their way to bring Lampard his number one targets where possible.
Lampard at the moment feels like he might need another elite centre back in the summer, one to eventually come in and replace Thiago Silva - who has been a colossal presence since arriving at the club this summer.
Lampard wants a younger defender but one who also brings experience - Gimenez fits that bill entirely.
There could be complications in trying to sign him though, due to his high £100million rumoured release clause. But Chelsea will look to do a deal that suits all parties, and the deal will help if Gimenez wants the move.
Which brings me on to my next subject - it looks very apparent that Gimenez DOES want the move, judging by his recent social media activity anyway.
He ‘liked’ a tweet on his Twitter account yesterday, which he swiftly ‘un-liked’ afterwards when Chelsea fans pulled it up on the timeline. But unfortunately, you cannot delete the thousands of screenshots that fans got of the ‘like’, and it appears quite telling…
Remember when Kai Havertz did something similar to this in the summer before he joined Chelsea? We all know what happened after that!
