Caicedo & Enzo…… what do they need to flourish?
This is a complex issue and one I am not 100% sure has just the one answer right now.
Good Evening ladies and gents,
Today I am honing in on Enzo and Caicedo and why their midfield partnership has been so hit and miss so far.
I think individually they have both had decent seasons, nothing spectacular and nothing to the level of the transfer fees we paid for them, but decent enough and anyone calling either a flop has no idea.
They seem to have both had good individual performances but when the other is having a below par game which makes the other players performance looks worse. They have had the odd game where they have been unplayable but I can count the amount of times that has happened on one hand easily.
What do they need to be consistent and be the monsters we all know they can be??
That question is hard to answer, they have the tenacious and energetic Gallagher playing alongside them so a player with those abilities isn’t necessarily the answer, would a Lavia type profile be the answer? Potentially, but that comes with attacking limitations as Enzo needs to be deep lying and Caicedo doesn’t have the attacking prowess of an Ngolo Kante who used to play a similar role alongside Jorginho and Kovacic.
So what do we do? I think a different system could work where Enzo plays as the middle deeper 6, then Caicedo a 6/8 hybrid off the right of Enzo and then we have a more attacking but also defensively capable no8 to the left. This isn’t playing Enzo as a lone 6 but has a hybrid feel to it.
Theses 2 are the only options I have right now for them to be more consistent together, it could also come down to the manager and how he is asking them to both play, they are best when they are close together and when Enzo can play as a quarter back and pick up deep lying positions and when Caicedo is being aggressive and breaking up play.
What would you do to get them to be more consistent together? How would you lineup the midfield next season?

We need to make these 2 work, not sell one, they have a great balance and compliment each others attributes well in the right system/under the right tactics they will flourish
good points in here Luke. Im hoping that PSG come in for Caicedo and offer good money. We can then get someone like Onana. Ideally we needed a Rice or Tchouaméni like profile alongside Enzo. Someone who has the quality as we as the physicality and who can eat up space. For >200m your midfield should be way more well rounded. The midfield should be able to pass, carry, run, press, shoot, tackle, head, score. Onana himself is no where near as refined as Rice or Tchouaméni but he can grow into that type of midfielder very quickly.
Having good players with complimentary profiles > just having good / decent players.
