Billy Gilmour - Set to Stay
Chelsea Insider Dan McCarthy gives the latest scoop on the Scottish midfielder's future in West London...
There’s been a great deal of discussion in the Chelsea world regarding the future of 19-year-old Billy Gilmour.
Apparent are significant rumours that he may head out on loan in pursuit of extended game time, when you accompany this with the fact Gilmour has shared the fact he wishes to play, with the wanting to force his way into the Scotland squad for Euro 2021, headlines of this manner are easy to print.
New boss Thomas Tuchel had this to say when asked about Gilmour’s future in SW6:
“For Billy the same in a different personal moment for him because he didn’t play the biggest role like Mason did in the last weeks. Maybe the decision for Mason yesterday was the toughest and we spoke about this in person.
“For Billy I have a good impression. He is a very strategic guy. A very high level of game understanding. Very good in the first contact. Very clever in positioning. We'll see if he has the physical level, if he can compete in the centre of the field in the most physical league in the world.
“We will see that, but he is super quick, super fast with his feet. Super fast with his decision making and very, very good in positioning.”
With that said, I understand Billy Gilmour after a discussion with Thomas Tuchel is set to stay at Chelsea for now.
I have been told that discussion focused on Tuchel’s demands for Gilmour and that of a player in his position specifically, despite Gilmour sharing he is open to heading out on loan in pursuit of extended game time.
Tuchel has highlighted a couple of areas of improvement for the young Scottish midfielder, a hint from the above quote suggests an area could be the “physical” department.
With that said, I understand the player has been assured he would be given the chance to impress Tuchel in training in the coming weeks, with the look to break into the starting team picture at Chelsea.
This news will excite fans of the young Scotsman, who believe Gilmour has developed enough to contribute to the resurgence of Chelsea under Tuchel on a more consistent basis.
In addition to that, those fans of the Chelsea academy and its products will also be grinning at the prospect of seeing another Chelsea youngster contributing to the first-team picture under the German.
