Atletico Madrid in talks to sign Marcos Alonso
The left back looks set to depart Stamford Bridge after a memorable 4 years at the club
Whether you rate him or not, there is no debate that Chelsea left back Marcos Alonso has been pinnacle to the clubs success over recent years, particularly at the start of his career at Stamford Bridge.
The former Real Madrid youth product arrived at Chelsea from Fiorentina for £24 million in 2016, and he was a regular in the Premier League winning side that season.
He has also helped Chelsea win the FA Cup and the Europa League during his time here, and he will be fondly remembered by Chelsea fans for those good times.
Alonso has played 116 times for Chelsea in the Premier League scoring 19 goals along the way, proving he was an important part of the club over the last four years popping up with many crucial goals.
But over the last couple of seasons he has largely become surplus to requirements as his form dropped and he became a defensive liability with the four at the back. Alonso was always better as a wing back and the setup no longer suits him.
He’s dropped down the pecking order to third choice left back behind Ben Chilwell and Emerson Palmieri, and he now looks set to depart on a loan deal.
The Independent are reporting that Atletico Madrid are now in talks to sign the 30-year old on loan in January.
There is no mention of whether there will be an option or an obligation to buy, but it is likely that Chelsea will include an option to buy - with his career at Stamford Bridge looking well and truly over.
There will be no hard feelings on either side if he does leave, and he will be thanked and wished all the success by the majority of Chelsea fans.
